Say what you will about the importance of greener energy sources, but converting our grid to accommodate these innovations won't be cheap or easy.
This is especially true for generators reformatting from coal power to natural gas, but the benefits certainly outweigh the challenges. However, thanks to mild winter weather and rock-bottom natural gas prices, coal-to-gas power plants are able to make the switch quicker than anticipated.
Because electricity demand typically decreases in spring and autumn, coal-to-gas generators expected they'd have to wait for the winter to end to schedule downtime to make the proper system adjustments. Instead, low electrical demand and cheap resources mean natural gas generators can produce more power without being burned by cost, while coal plants go offline for their upgrades.
