Offshore wind farms might soon be visible along the Jersey Shore. The U.S. Department of the Interior recently announced it will be auctioning off three-hundred and forty-four thousand acres of open ocean just outside Atlantic City.
This project gives the government hope it can meet certain benchmarks outlined by the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan, namely the development of 20,000 megawatts of green infrastructure by 2020. The proposed wind farm could contribute as much as 3,400 megawatts toward that goal.
Depending on the winning bid, this extra capacity could go toward mid-Atlantic states like New Jersey, whose ratepayers experience some of the highest energy costs in the country. Who knows? This auction could bring them a breath of fresh air.
