Ohio vetoes $72 million yearly tax exemption for generators [Video]

Ohio energy generators were stymied by Governor John Kasich this week after they attempted to defer millions of dollars in tax obligations away from power plants and onto distributors.

Governor Kasich vetoed a portion of a larger budgetary bill that reappropriated $72 million worth of annual property taxes to the businesses who own the transmission infrastructure doling out the generators' power. Kasich wrote in his veto that although he commits himself to keeping Ohio's energy market competitive, the consequences for such an exemption are unknown and require more study.

However, should retail energy providers be saddled with these extra costs year after year, it could have them searching for new ways to make up the difference, including charging ratepayers.
