The EPA recently announced that the first-ever set of federal regulations that will attempt to curb power plant carbon emissions will be finalized this summer.

These rules would affect new, existing and modified power plants, ensuring they meet the EPA's targets for carbon reduction. The individual states will be responsible for providing their own plans for how they intend to meet those goals.

The new measures - under the banner of the Clean Power Plan - have not gone without opposition. Several industry leaders and groups have criticized the plan, saying the timeframe for reducing carbon output is too short, which could undermine grid reliability and electricity prices.
